How was Squirrelflight ever a jerk to Ashfur?

Yes, Squirrelflight did hurt him, but she never meant to hurt him on purpose. I've seen drawings of Squirrelflight looking evil when she left him and that's not who she is. Squirrelflight isn't evil. It's really, the other way around. Ashfur is evil.

Okay, so this all started when Squirrelflight told Ashfur that she didn't want to be his mate anymore. But was Squirrelflight ever a b with an itch to him about it? No, she was not. She politely told Ashfur that she cared about him as a friend, but didn't want any more than that:

"Look, Ashfur," Squirrelflight's voice told Brambleclaw that she was trying hard to hold her temper. "I really care about you as a friend, but I don't want any more than that."

"But I love you!" Ashfur protested. More hesitantly, he added, "We'd be great together, Squirrelflight. I know we would.

Sunset, pages 61-62

Oh, and can I mention that he tried to make Brambleclaw look bad just because Tigerstar was his father just so Squirrelflight wouldn't choose him as his mate?

"I don't know how you can say that!" There was a hint of a snarl in Ashfur's voice. "You said yourself that it's impossible to trust a cat with Brambleclaw's heritage. He's a great cat, I know, but he is still Tigerstar's son."

Sunset, page 62

Just because you're really close friends with someone does not mean that they're mates. If you're best friends with someone you've known for seven years, talk every day, does that mean you're their boyfriend/girlfriend? No, I think not. It just means you're really good friends. It was never confirmed that Ashfur was together with Squirrelflight.

People also thought Squirrelflight ignored him, but it's Ashfur who ignored her! And let me also put that Squirrelflight said so herself that she didn't mean to hurt him, and she felt guilty that she did, even though she never hurt him on purpose!

For a moment she thought Squirrelflight would stalk off without replying. Then her sister turned back, cast a rapid glance at Cloudtail, and mewed in a low voice, "It's Ashfur. I passed him just now, and when I said hi he stared right through me as if I wasn't there. Rainwhisker was with him," she went on as Leafpool laid her tail comfortingly on her shoulder. "The whole Clan must be talking about me!"

"You can hardly blame Ashfur," Leafpool told her. "He really cares for you."

"I never meant to hurt him!" Squirrelflight's voice, though quiet, was anguished, and her green eyes were filled with guilt. "He's a great cat, and I thought it would work out, being with him. But Brambleclaw...Oh, Leafpool, do you think I'm doing the right thing?"

Sunset, page 83

Bramblestar is the perfect mate for Squirrelflight. He matched her fire, and he understood that she didn't always want to be babied. Ever since Squirrelflight's been an apprentice, she always wanted to fight her own battles and never wanted anyone to help defend her.

Ashfur was too overprotective. He always tried to defend her when it wasn't necessary. While he is a good friend, being there for her when she was sad, he just didn't..match her fire like Bramblestar did.

Just by the way how she's speaking proves that she cared about what she did and she truly did feel guilty.

When Brambleclaw was being made deputy, Ashfur went as far as trying his best not to make him deputy by making Leafpool seem like she lied to her Clan about the sign she received from StarClan:

"Well, I can!" To Leafpool's surprise, the challenge came from Ashfur. He marched forward until he stood directly beneath the Highledge, the moonlight turning his gray pelt to silver. Instead of addressing his leader, he turned to face the Clan. "Doesn't any cat think it's odd that Squirrelflight is Brambleclaw's mate, and our medicine cat is Squirrelflight's sister? It's very convenient that she had a sigh about Brambleclaw just now, isn't it?"

Sunset, page 258

Ashfur had plenty of cats to talk to in order to move on from Squirrelflight. It takes several months for kittens to become fully grown warriors, and let me remind you that Hollyleaf, Jayfeather and Lionblaze were still kittens when Ashfur wasn't with Squirrelflight anymore. He had plenty of time and months to move on. Don't tell me he didn't.

In Long Shadows, this is when we see his insanity. Ashfur wanted to hurt Squirrelflight. Why? She didn't want to sleep with him. Ashfur tried to murder cats, four innocent cats who isn't a part of Squirrelflight, just so she could feel the same pain he did. Please! Squirrelflight proved to him that she cared about him. That alone should be enough to make him feel appreciative. But no, he tried to kill her "children" and father:

"Stay there!" Turning to face Squirrelflight but keeping one paw onto the branch he hissed, "I can't believe you didn't know how much you hurt me. You are the blind one, not Jayfeather. Who do you think sent Firesstar the message to go down to the lake, where the fox trap was? I wanted him to die, to take your father away so you'd know the real meaning of pain."

Long Shadows, page 274

"You don't understand." Ashfur looked at her as if he was seeing her for the first time; his voice was puzzled and petulant. "This is the only way to make you feel the same pain that you caused me. You tore my heart out when you chose Brambleclaw over me. Anything I did to you would never hurt as much. But your kits..." He looked through the flames at Hollyleaf and her brothers, his eyes narrowing to dark blue slits. "If you watch them die, then you'll know the pain I felt."

Long Shadows, page 275

Before Ashfur died, he had plenty of warnings from Jayfeather and Lionblaze and Squirrelflight, telling him not to tell the truth at the Gathering. Ashfur had his chances. If Hollyleaf had let him live, then Ashfur would not have changed. He's proven already that he would have kept hold of his grudge over Squirrelflight and caused even more problems for his Clan if he kept on living.

Ashfur has proven that he is selfish and didn't care about Squirrelflight. Really, if anyone has a broken heart, it's really Squirrelflight you should feel bad for. He tried to hurt the cats she loved and threatened to tell the truth at the Gathering so she could lose the trust of her Clanmates and her mate, Brambleclaw.

If Ashfur really cared, then he would have acted more like Thrushpelt. Thrushpelt wanted to make Bluefur happy no matter what he had to do. He didn't even ask who the father of her kittens were! Thrushpelt loved Bluefur's kittens as though they were his own, let the Clan believe that he was the father and helped support Bluefur. This is what Ashfur should have done. Ashfur never did this. He is the exact opposite of Thrushpelt.

And why is Ashfur in StarClan? I don't think he even deserves it! He never "loved too much" and even Jayfeather believed that he didn't love her! He doesn't deserve his place in StarClan. He deserves the Dark Forest because of what he did! He tried to murder, and that's a huge deal. I honestly think the Erins did this to please the fans so they wouldn't bash on them, because really, every cat who tried to murder was sent to the Dark Forest. Ashfur's obsession over Squirrelflight should be no different. He chose the same dark path.

I don't like Ashfur and I feel no sympathy for him. If I were one of the Authors, I would have sent his body to kitty hell and never see him again. He doesn't deserve StarClan or Squirrelflight. I don't like Ashfur and I never will.
My opinion about Ashfur's.....love life. I feel like many people judge Squirrelflight too harshly and just assumed she was mates with him when she really wasn't. I've proved to you that Squirrelflight was nice to him when really, it's Ashfur who acted like a jerk to her. Squirrelflight doesn't deserve all of the hate she gets today.  Yes she did hurt him, but not in the way everyone thinks she did.

EDIT: Wow, this is my most popular rant. That's insane XD

PEOPLE! Stop saying "His only fault was he loved too much", thats not the only reason not saying this because I'm an ashfur fan

The Place of No Stars (informally known as the Dark Forest) is the opposite of Starclan's hunting grounds. It is a place where cats that have committed great crimes against their clan  and against the Warrior Code go when they die. However, cats who commit crimes but believe they are following the Warrior Code by doing them can usually join the ranks of StarClan instead, like Mudclaw or Ashfur.

"It's a shame that Ashfur is most famous for quarreling with Brambleclaw over Squirrelflight. He really loved Squirrelflight, you know, even if he wasn't the best match for her. He tried to hard to protect her, to stop her from jumping in with all four paws when sometimes that's the only way Squirrelflight learns anything. But Ashfur is a strong, brave warrior, one that I'd want on my side in a battle."

"Any cat in ThunderClan would say that he has mentored Lionpaw well, shaped him into one of the best fighting cats this Clan has ever known. Some might accuse him of being confrontational, too quick to argue when he doesn't agree with a decision. But look at Dustpelt; he was never Firestar's best friend, yet he is a courageous, trustworthy warrior who has earned his leader's respect. Even thought Ashfur and Brambleclaw were once rivals for Squirrelflight's affection, there's no reason Ashfur can't be a loyal ThunderClan warrior. Be careful. If you listen to much to Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight, it's easy to dismiss Ashfur as a toublemaker out for revenge. But other cats should listen to what he has to say. He has a story of his own."

He didn't kill anyone, either (although he attempted to).
